Plot: Earl of Grantham Lord Robert Crawley contemplates his life's work and his family's legacy, especially the magnificent estate, Downton Abbey. Matthew Crawley, his distant relative, takes up the job after his heir perishes on the R.M.S. Titanic. Conflicts arise between the socially conscious mother of Matthew, a barrister from Manchester, and the conservative dowager countess when they move onto the estate.
