Plot: The Wangara people live on the east coast of New Zealand, believing their ancestor Paikea escaped a crashed canoe by landing on the back of a whale and that they had lived there for at least a thousand years. Henceforth, Wangara leaders were regarded as the direct descendants of Paikaia, as they were consistently the oldest male sons. A patriarchal tribe in New Zealand has an 11-year-old girl named Pai who feels she will one day take the helm as their new chief.
